THIS WEEKEND ONLY: Van Gogh’s Paintings Come Alive at Raven Theatre

Master Works: The Van Gogh Plays is a festival of short plays based on six paintings by Vincent Van Gogh: Night CafeThe Man is at SeaSkull with Burning CigaretteUndergrowth with Two FiguresDoctor Gachet, and The Drinkers (which can be seen at the Art Institute of Chicago). Six locally & nationally recognized Chicago playwrights were asked to bring their imaginations to bear and create an original play based on the painting they were assigned. Then six up-and-coming directors were chosen to take these new plays and bring them to life on stage. The results included stabbings, weddings, manifestos, and a post-apocalyptic wasteland! Like the great painter himself, Master Works: The Van Gogh Plays promises to be an inspiring blend of genius and insanity!

Commedia Beauregard, the local non-profit theater company behind the Klingon Christmas Carol phenomenon, presents the Master Works series as one more way to follow its mission of exploring cultures through the art of translation. Master Works: The Van Gogh Plays showcases new plays by Ellen Cribbs, Christopher Kidder-Mostrom, Rory Leahy, Jason Lindner, Alberto Mendoza, and Sean Margaret Wagner; which are directed by Niki Dreistadt, Celia Forrest, Toma Langston, Richard Paro, Erik Parsons, and Brittany Westfall.
